So as we are getting ready for summer time it is also time to get excited about some great white wines that we may have not thought about during the winter months. Something that I have forgotten to revisit till just recently is the wonderful world of Roses’. I realize that among “wine snobs” Roses seem like kids stuff but they have become not just that cheap wine we might consider kids stuff. Roses are often dismissed as just that weird pink wine your great Aunt drinks. We are definitely not talking about “white Zin” so please don’t be mistaken. Roses are made with the skin contact method. Black skinned grapes are pressed and the juice is allowed to remain with skin typically one to three days, the skins are then remove during fermentation and do not stay as they do with red wine. This is the more common way to produce rose’. Rose’ can also be made by technique known as Saignee’ where it s a by product of red wine fermentation. Spanish Rose’ are called rosado which tend to be more colorful that French Roses. My favorite Roses are dry and have light flavors or dry summer fruits such as strawberry. They are great for sitting by the pool, the beach , the dock, the porch, anything outside. Roses’ pair well with cheeses, summer salads, pork tenderloin, omeletes, fish and seafood dishes. I especially love them with Thai food.
This is my our first roll out of our blog which we will be updated weekly so follow us. We will be talking about our great Grotto specials, our staff favorites and what new events we will be proudly offering at the Grotto. Don’t forget or every Thursday wine tasting from 6pm to 8pm only $5 to taste all 6 wines. Typically 3 whites and 3 reds. This week one of our whites will be one of my favorite Roses. If you do the $5 tasting we will give you a discount on any bottles that are on that tasting!
